Ancient Torii

Description

Torii are the wooden gates you see at shrines. Omiwa Shrine is thought to be very old and some of the customs differ from most other shrines. It is thought that torii may have started out as just rope strung between 2 objects and later morphed into rope hanging between poles, which in turn became the fully wooden one most are familiar with.
