Kunisaki Peninsula

Kunisaki Peninsula is in Oita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. It is relatively isolated, so developed a fascinating local culture of nativist Shinto beliefs mixed with Buddhist ones as well. Per legend, when the Buddhist gods came to the area, the local gods agreed to protect them. Kunisaki has 6 mountains with Buddhist temples near the summit. On the summits are nativist shrines, which are there to shield the Buddhist deities.
